URCS Gulu region strengthens capacity of its branches
The Uganda Red Cross has continued to boost its operations in Gulu region in order to strengthen the capacity of the branches there to effectively and efficiently deliver services to the most vulnerable. Gulu is one of the regional centers established in 2007, consisting of six branches namely: Gulu, Apac, Lira, Kitgum, Pader and Adjumani.
A number of new projects including Reproductive Health Program and Adolescent Sexual Reproductive program were introduced in the districts of Amuru, Kitgum, Gulu and Oyam in order to reinforce organizational capacity.
At least three branches upped their recruitment and membership registration efforts for improved productivity and self-sustenance Out of the 29 dissemination sessions conducted in these branches, 150 members were recruited, 90 of these being youth members, 59 life and one annual. In addition, 960 child beneficiaries were registered in Gulu under the psychosocial support project while 72 volunteers recruited and trained as community facilitators in Gulu and Lira branches for the same project.
About 90 out of school youth drawn from all the six branches attended a four day regional camp at Unyama National Teachers’ College. During the camp the youth were trained in Dissemination skills, LPS and leadership skills. The camp was a motivation for the youth. It is hoped that the volunteers will get back to their branches and recruit more youth into the society.
Alex Onzima, the Regional Program Officer appreciated the team work which was demonstrated amongst the branches, regional and national headquarters as well as the network with other stake holders. “Individual branches will only be able to overcome the challenges faced here and there only if they put in extra effort as team players,” he said.
