Rural water
Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) in conjunction with Danish Red Cross carried out various activities in the Western Uganda for the period of January to March 2010 under rural water and sanitation project.
According to the Secretary General Mr. Micheal Nataka, the objectives of the project were to reduce cholera prevalence, improve health status and living conditions as well as strengthening coping mechanisms of the most vulnerable rural communities.
The project districts were Kasese ,Kabarole, Budibugyo,Hoima and Bulisa and the project’s implementation structure comprised of a team of eight project stuff,86 project volunteers and PHAST groups(lot 1and 2)
The activities planned during the quarter included, construction of 17 shallow wells, 46 springs, and training of 57 water user communities, support to PHAST group activities, five radio talk shows and installation of 18 demonstration latrines.
During this period,14 contracts for on going works were registered; two for siting, supervision of borehole drilling and shallow well construction, two for shallow well construction, two for drilling of boreholes and eight for spring protection, Nataka said.
“Five contracts were successfully finished in Bundibugyo and Kabarole by Byentuyu Enterprises, Basare construction, water works company and completion of six springs by VENUS in Kasese,” said Nataka.
According to Mr. Nataka, technical assessment of water options in 118 villages, promotin of 39 springs with a functional average yield of 0.15ltr/s, six shallow wells, one demonstration latrine and six Bank accounts for operation and maintenance of water sources were achieved.
“On water sources costruction,65 water sources ,45 protected springs,11 shallow wells, eight deep boreholes were achieved, six water sources commissioned and 18 rehabilitated water points,” Nataka said.
