Who is Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS)?

The Uganda Red Cross Society is the leading humanitarian organization in Uganda. Since its inception in 1939 as a small women''s emergency organization, Uganda Red Cross has developed over the years into a formidable well-respected humanitarian agency. In 1941, it became a branch of the British Red Cross. The Uganda Red Cross constitution was adopted by an "Act of Parliament in 1964" and admitted as a member of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent in 1965.

It has over 200,000 registered members with one and half million beneficiaries of its interventions. Uganda Red Cross Society works through 51 Branch Offices covering the whole of Uganda. As a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement comprising the International Federation and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Uganda Red Cross Society works with a number of partners in the execution of its mission. These include the government of Uganda, United Nations Agencies, NGOs and participating Sister Red Cross National Societies.

Vision

  • An empowered, healthy and self-sustaining community that responds to the needs of the most vulnerable.

Mission

  • To improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable people in Uganda as an effective and efficient humanitarian organization

Core Values of URCS

These are based on the seven Principles of the Movement. The core values are:

  • Open mindedness: we are a learning organisation, we have perception, flexibility and we do listen to the community. We are responsive to internal and external environment
  • Responsive: We provide attention to the vulnerable people; we respond to the assessed needs as per our commitment and mandate
  • Integrity/Transparency/Stewardship: Our acts conform with that we say and with ethical behaviour and generally accepted standards of effectiveness. We responsibly utilise available resource, according to what we plan and claim to deliver and openly share the information with relevant stakeholders
  • Responsible: We react to emergencies in a timely and valuable way.
  • Democracy: We believe in equal distribution of power at all levels
  • Value for people: We accord essence to humanity, value human life without discrimination, this is a guide factor to all our interventions.
  • Equity/Equality: Our resource allocation system considers the vulnerable and promotes fairness to all
  • Time Management: We endeavour to meet deadlines and work within time limits and time frames we set.

The Seven Red Cross Principles

  • Humanity: The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavours, in its international and national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples
  • Impartiality: It makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It endeavours to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress.
  • Neutrality: In order to continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature.
  • Independence: The Movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the Movement.
  • Voluntary Service: It is a voluntary relief organization not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.
  • Unity: There can be only one Red Cross or one Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory.
  • Universality: The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all Societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide
