DAILY MONITOR VOTED URCS AS VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 2014

The Daily Monitor in its annual nominations of different personalities of the year nominated and voted our very own Mwiine Andrew Kaggwa as the most outstanding volunteer of 2014 after following up his contribution towards the most vulnerable. Mwiine Andrew has been a volunteer for now 10 years and he is also the Branch Youth Chairperson of Entebbe. In his own words, Mwiine’s philosophy is life’s persistent and most urgent question in life - what you are doing for others? By Martin Luther Mwine told the following story about his experience with Uganda Red Cross Society: “I am proud to be part of the 2nd biggest brand in the world the Red Cross which has mentored me to become an influential and opinion leader in my community and also the entire society of the Red Cross in Uganda”. I joined URCS in my senior four and I have followed its dynamic changes untill today and I have maintained my momentum to achieve its vision which is improving the lives of the most vulnerable. I have specialized in youth driven activities especially in areas of leadership, life planning skills as well as reproductive health. I encourage my fellow youth never to give up on service towards the most vulnerable because in the long run you change a life and your own life also changes.” I am hoping that with God on my side I will continue uplifting the power of humanity until the sky is no longer the limit. I appreciate my fellow youth and Volunteers particularly from Entebbe and the entire Kampala cluster for trusting me to lead them in several activities and all the other clusters where I have implemented for a long time. I am as well thankful to the youth department for giving me exposure through different opportunities given to me in the URCS and the entire youth governance for their encouragement for my family God bless them. RED CROSS RESCUES 39 IN FATAL ROAD TRAFFIC CRASH

A tragic road traffic crash involving a FUSO truck carrying forty (40) Bivamuntuyo traders of Mubende and Mityana districts on their way back from a market day crashed at Lwasi – Mubende along Mubende-FortPortal highway in the evening of Thursday 14th May 2015 at 6:00pm. Four (4) First Aid providers from the Uganda Red Cross Society’s Mubende sub-Branch provided the most- needed life-saving assistance including stopping bleeding, immobilizing broken bones as well as airway maintenance and; with help of an ambulance from the Ministry of Health and private cars from people of goodwill swiftly referred all 39 casualties to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital. One female passenger from Mityana district died on the spot while another male passenger died en-route to hospital.   Survivors and eye witnesses attributed the cause of the crash as over-speeding as the truck was on a steep slope, where the brakes failed making the driver to lose control. “The operation took us up to 11:45 pm after confirming that all casualties were safely evacuated” said RCAT team leader and Mubende sub-Branch Focal Persons Mr. Matovu Richard who worked tirelessly through the night with assistance from three other volunteers namely Mwesige George, Tyaba Francis and Kamoga Bruno.

LAUNCH OF DISASTER FORECAST-BASED ACTION

Uganda Red Cross on 14th November distributed 4950 preparedness items in flood-prone communities of Kapelebyong Sub County, and Amuria in a groundbreaking response, based on a scientific forecast of flooding in the region. The items have been procured with financial support from German Red Cross through a Disaster Preparedness Fund. Previously, humanitarian organizations had to wait for reports of damages, losses, and suffering in order to be able to mobilize funding and materials to respond to a disaster. In this state-of-the-art project of “Forecast based Financing”, Uganda Red Cross mobilized the NFIs immediately, before reporting suffering. They triggered action based on a forecast of rising water levels this week in the Teso area, particularly in Amemia Parish. Clean water shortage The floods contaminate many water sources. The Red Cross team organized for transport of non-food items from the warehouse in Kampala, loading trucks with jerry cans, hoes, chlorine tablets, sacks and soap. The items arrived at the office in Soroti Branch on Friday, and were disbursed that morning to pilot communities in Kapelebyong. While water levels have continued to rise in the area, the team is confident that the items disbursed will enable residents to avoid potential disaster impacts. “One of the disaster effects they are targeting is the spread of waterborne diseases. Many areas in Teso have a history of dysentery, and Red Cross is working to prevent any disease outbreak. The teams have distributed two jerry cans, two bars of soap, and a month’s supply of water purification tablets to every household in the villages of Okoboi, Omatai, Apedu and Akulonyo.”
