German government donates 400,000 euros for Oyam water project

The German government has donated a grant of 400,000 euros (1 billion) shillings to Oyam district local government to improve the water and sanitation project in the district.

The money, channeled through the Northern Uganda Recovery Programme, is aimed at improving the lives of the vulnerable people after the over 20-year LRA insurgency.

The eight-month project to resettle formerly displaced people is being implemented by Uganda Red Cross Society in collaboration with German Red Cross.

It targets schools and the neighboring communities and was launched by the LC5 chairman, Col. Okello Engola at Amua Primary School in Minakulu Sub County, Oyam district.

The Uganda Red Cross Society vice-chairman, Mr. Robert Ssebunya, in the presence of the German Red Cross project coordinator/water and sanitation for northern Uganda, Harry Van Putten and district officials, last year opened four boreholes and protected springs.

Putten said Minakulu; Ngai, Otwal and Iceme sub-counties had each got one new borehole.

Scarcity of water sources main challenge for rural communities

Access to safe water remains a big challenge in most rural areas of Uganda. As Danish Red Cross prepares for a water summit to discuss challenges faced by rural communities in accessing safe water, a team of Danish journalists were in Uganda last week to assess the situation and make a report that will be a basis for the discussion.

The summit to be attended by among others the Secretary General of Uganda Red Cross Society, Mr. Michael Richard Nataka, and Ugandan Minister for Water and Environment, Ms. Maria Mutagabwa, will be held in Copenhagen from 29th September to 1st October this year.

During a field trip to some of the rural areas of Kabarole and Bundibugyo, it was discovered that residents fetch water from seasonal streams which are shared with animals. Explaining the hardships they go through, a resident of Kibuuki 1village, Rwebisengo Sub County in Bundibugyo, also a participatory hygiene and sanitation transformation (PHAST) member said they only access water during the rainy season.
