‘Work without play makes little Tom a dull boy’ It’s a phrase that for long people have embraced despite the difference in cultures and customs.

Uganda Red Cross Society Lira branch has embraced the idea of sports and games as a means to relax and socialize with others.

On 8th January, 2012, the Branch took part in a football tournament organized by the Federation of Ugandan Football Association (FUFA) in Lango sub-region. The major reason of the branch’s participation in this tournament was to bring the youth in the region together, to share ideas and challenges as they also learn from their fellow youth.

In addition to bringing youths together, the branch also aimed at revamping its football team which for long was not active. Despite its infant nature though, it managed to register overwhelming victory by beating 6-0 against Apac District football club, 2-0 against the Black Rhinos, 1-0 against Amolater District football club and a draw with Oyam District FC.

The branch also organized an inter-link volleyball tournament at the Uganda Technical College play grounds in Lira District attracting over 12 Red Cross links from Lira School of Nursing (Boys and Girls), Alebtong and Town College all in Lira District.

Among other activities carried out included first aid services to the sports men and women as well as tree planting. The tree planting exercise was conducted at URCS Masindi Branch where the winners during the tournament were taken for an exchange visit thereafter.
