Water and Sanitation Crisis Interventions.A Red Cross Perspective with the Emergency Response Module (M40) & Mass Sanitation Model (MSM)

Thirst nearly killed me. I drunk dirty water on the way together with my children. The sun was too hot; we had walked close to 80 kilometers without any food or water. I almost collapsed but we managed to pull it through to Uganda.” 38-year-old Julia Amer, mother 0f 5 children in Imvepi refugee settlement, West Nile, Northern Uganda. She’s now able to access clean and safe water. Thanks to water tap constructed by Uganda Red Cross in the community where she lives. While Julia now smiles with access to clean and safe water, Water, essential as it is for human survival, remains one of the scarce resources that host communities continue to share with the growing number of refugees from South Sudan on a daily basis. Severe water shortages in the West Nile contribute to high mortality due to disease outbreaks, hunger / malnutrition which have been named among the major humanitarian crises. Uganda Red Cross with support from the federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent through partner National Societies (German Red Cross, Swedish Red Cross, Austrian Red Cross and British Red Cross) launched efforts to improve water access through the provision of the M40 (Emergency response Unit M40) and the Mass Sanitation Module (MSM) respectively.

CHINA RED CROSS EXPRESSES INTEREST TO SUPPORT URCS BLOOD DONOR RECRUITMENT PROGRAM

In Uganda today, nearly 50% of inpatient deaths among children under-five are attributed to malaria which causes severe anemia. Therefore, 50% of all blood collected in Uganda is used to treat these children. Haemorrhage contributes to 34% to all maternal deaths in Uganda hence 30% of donated blood is used to save lives of pregnant women with complications of pregnancy and child birth, including Haemorrhage and malaria-induced anemia.Bivamuntuyo traders of Mubende and Mityana districts on their way back from a market day crashed at Lwasi – Mubende along Mubende-FortPortal highway in the evening of Thursday 14th May 2015 at 6:00pm. Four (4) First Aid providers from the Uganda Red Cross Society’s Mubende sub-Branch provided the most- needed life-saving assistance including stopping bleeding, immobilizing broken bones as well as airway maintenance and; with help of an ambulance from the Ministry of Health and private cars from people of goodwill swiftly referred all 39 casualties to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital. One female passenger from Mityana district died on the spot while another male passenger died en-route to hospital.   Survivors and eye witnesses attributed the cause of the crash as over-speeding as the truck was on a steep slope, where the brakes failed making the driver to lose control. “The operation took us up to 11:45 pm after confirming that all casualties were safely evacuated” said RCAT team leader and Mubende sub-Branch Focal Persons Mr. Matovu Richard who worked tirelessly through the night with assistance from three other volunteers namely Mwesige George, Tyaba Francis and Kamoga Bruno.  Blood remains a scarce resource in many hospitals and therefore calls for combined efforts to mobilise it in a bid to save lives. Uganda Red Cross has a role of mobilizing blood donors in the country. On 27th August, 2016, the Uganda Red Cross Society received a delegation from China who had come to explore opportunities of partnership with the Uganda Red Cross Society to support blood donor recruitment. The delegation was led by Wang Rupeng, the Vice president of the Red Cross society of China, Liu Xuanguo, the Vice chairperson of the Chinese foundation among others. Much as they have been partners before, the partnership is being shifted from emergency response support to blood transfusion services. The delegation visited the URCS- Jinja branch to pilot the project.

Lutheran World Relief Donates Items Worth 800,000,000 Million to Uganda Red Cross Society

The donations that included 160 Bales of Blankets and 220 cartons of school kits were handed over to the Secretary General of the Red Cross at their offices in Rubaga in August 2016. The donation came at a time when Uganda is facing an influx of refugees and asylum seekers fleeing conflict in South Sudan. It has been reported that over 299,000 South Sudanese refugees displaced by violence crossed the border into Uganda in July, according to Andreas Needham the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) agency spokesman. The agency noted that over 2000 South Sudanese arrive in Uganda each day. This crisis has severely stretched the capacity of Uganda’s refugee centres and constrained the country in terms of providing social services, food, health, education, water and sanitation services to the refugees and therefore any help accorded by donors goes a long way in making a huge impact to the refugees
