
On February 27th, arsonists suspected to be students on suspension torched two dormitory facilities at Kyamate Secondary School in Ntungamo Municipality . The incident left one student dead and three others injured. About 135 students were left without any property. The Uganda Red Cross Society ( URCS) Ntungamo branch, disaster response team conducted a rapid assessment & established the needs of the affected school.
On March 6th 2023, URCS delivered relief aid to the affected school population. Students received mattresses, jerricans, mosquito nets, blankets, first aid boxes, soap, plates, and cups to enable them start life again while pursuing their education.
Mr John Atugonza, the Uganda Red Cross Society Safe Access officer said: “We understand the challenges the school is going through, but we hope when the students are stable, the school shall find ways to fix the other challenges. So, we hope the items aid the students to recover from the trauma. Emmanuel Arinaitwe the Head Master of Kyamate SS thanked Uganda Red Cross for the support they received.” As a school we are so grateful for this timely support, these non food items will help us cope with life.” Arinaitwe noted.
